July  ’10 - The planting environment of African violets will turn quite acidic as soilless mixes break down.  Fertilizers also play a role in the acidification process.  Look for a fertilizer that has a low “Potential Acidity” (defined as the number of lbs. of calcitic limestone needed to neutralize the acidic effect caused by the application of one ton of this fertilizer).  This information should be on the label.  The Potential Acidity of popular AV fertilizers ranges from the 100’s to the 700’s!
